Bounded by peer pressure and media messages, children today may find it hard to be themselves. Children who do not express themselves genuinely can become people-pleasers with low self-esteem or unhappy adults who cannot reach their fullest potentials. This is why as parents, it is important to encourage the child to be more expressive and creative.

Aside from fostering self-expression, imagination and art therapy has been shown to reduce the feelings of pain in children. Here are 7 Ways to Help You Encourage Expression and Creativity

1. ALLOW FREE PLAY

Give your child an unstructured time (e.g., 30 minutes, 1 hour, or so) to do whatever he/she wants. This free time will help your child to digest what happened during the day and to use endless imagination.

2. DISCUSS CREATIVITY

Have an open communication with your child about creativity. Listen to child and ask where does he/she come up with the best ideas. Is it inside the train while on the way to the tuition center? If yes then, let your child keep a notebook or lend an iPad for noting down the creative thoughts.

3. HAVE A SPACE FOR CREATION

Once you talked to your child about the place of creative thoughts, assign a place where he/she can play. It does not have to be a fancy space. A tiny corner with Legos or coloring books will do.

4. GAINING PERSONAL STYLE

Support your children's personal style by letting them pick their own cloths. They may come up with mismatched outfits but, it is a great way to let them think on their own and to let them develop their personal style.

5. ACTIVATE THE 5 SENSES

Activate your children's senses by exposing them to libraries, museums, and zoos. While there, you can ask your children to imagine that they are traveling in a different place. For example, you can make them imagine what it is like if the Dinosaur fossils in the museums are alive today or what is it like to be in the African Safari while you are in the Singapore Zoo. You do not need to go on complicated or costly trips to shape your child's imagination.

6. INTRODUCE THE BEAUTY OF ARTS

Kids can express themselves emotions of happiness, excitement, anger, and sadness better through art. Everyone has a unique artistic expression so it is best to introduce your child to the different outlets such as drawing, singing, music, dancing, sculpture, theatre, or painting.

If you really want to hone your child's creativity then you must let him/her try the Mandala Painting Kit by Paintastic Art Craft. The kit includes stapled canvas, acrylic paints, brush, and instruction manual. Mandala paintings are rich in historical and elegant designs. What makes it even more imaginative is that there are no designated colors for each shape.

Your children can use their imaginations through mixing the 23 colors and painting the entire canvas while listening to their favorite song. Click here for more details.

7. HELP IN THE PURSUIT OF PASSION

Pay attention to your child's interests and passion and make sure that the materials or activities that they need are available to them. So, if your child is interested in geology, then buy him books about rocks.
